Embarrassing Photo of the Day

The year was 1989. I thought it would be a good idea to get a spiral perm the day before this photo was taken. I was modeling for Sassy Club, a merchandising page in which the magazine sold things like the kit that was used to paint that flower on my face. Staff members took turns modeling the stuff. At the shoot where this frightening photo was taken, I was also photographed in a pair of gray bike shorts that very clearly showed my private parts. Someone in the art department must have been mad at me when they selected that photo for publication. That other photo, the one I am not publishing here, makes this one look positively respectable. By the way, I don't know if you can see, but my eyebrows are crazily darkened.

I used to carry this around in my Filofax (remember those?) and pull it out whenever there was a lull in the conversation or I thought the mood needed lightening. Now I kind of feel like there's been a lull, AND the mood needs lightening.

So there you go.

  1. Your photo and memories made me smile, Christina! I spent the first nine years of my working life at 'TEEN Magazine where we also did photo shoots, radio commercials and the like -- all ranging from neutral to horribly embarrassing. I don't have any photos with quite the conversation-starting star quality of yours, but it does bring back lots of memories! Thanks for sharing it!!

  2. Christina you look adorable in that picture! I remember the Sassy Club, but I don't think my mom ever let me actually buy anything. Your hair is totally appropriate for the times too. I had a similar style actually, but I can't blame mine on a bad perm. I have curly hair and this was back in the days when I didn't know how to have it cut, and they didn't have as good hair products back then either.

  3. Consider the lull officially over!

  4. I showed my kids my Sassy Club photos (waaaayyy too much makeup, btw) and they were mortified on my behalf.

  5. I am so jealous of your spiral perm. All I desired from 1988-1992 was a damn spiral perm. Alas, my hair--thin, straight, blonde--was only capable of taking on a "wave." So many dollars wasted; so much dark, curly hair coveted. (It didn't help that I went to college on Long Island during this time--tortured by spiral perms everywhere I turned.)

  6. I remember this! If it makes you feel any better, at the time I thought this picture was beyond cool. Not cool enough for me to go out an get a spiral perm of my own, but I think I eventually bought a similar pair of bike shorts.

  7. I know we all tend to laugh at pics taken in the past (those taken in the 80s are like my personal gallery of horrors), but you really looked lovely here.
